I have always loved the work of Gericault…his tender paintings of lovingly stacked body parts. One day at my studio I saw a long piece of brown kraft paper lying on the floor. It looked like an arm. I decided to make it into an actual arm. I made a wire armature, stuffing it with paper and covering it with wheat pasted kozo paper. I then painted it to look like a real arm with veins and skin. After this, I started working 3 dimensionally. This 3D work usually has some “body” connection—arms, severed feet, an ear, an enlarged fist.  Once I make a form, I treat the surface like I would a figurative oil painting— a 3D painting. Instead of a painting of an arm it is an arm painting. My body, the bodies and body parts from masterpiece paintings and narratives like The Annunciation all serve as reference.
